Taking a step: concrete ways to accompany a family

Manos que se unen

“Taking a step” sounds good and says nothing. So let us be concrete: these are the four ways of accompanying that have a real effect in the communities today, and what each one involves.

The first is sponsoring a family. It is a monthly commitment assigned to one specific household: it covers food, school materials and the follow-up of a community contact who visits the home.

The second is an open monthly gift. It is not assigned to one family but to the common fund with which we sustain the centres, the materials and the mission trips. It is what lets us plan beyond next month.

The third is a one-off gift. It covers what comes up suddenly: a medical emergency, a roof giving way, a shipment of hygiene products that has to move now.

The fourth is volunteering, and it does not always mean travelling. We need people who translate, who organise logistics, who call suppliers or who accompany a catechesis group from a distance.

We are often asked which of the four helps most. The honest answer is: the one you can sustain. A small, steady gift is worth more than a large one that does not repeat, because it lets us commit to costs in advance.

Every gift is recorded and can be cancelled whenever you like, with no calls and no explanations. We would rather someone paused for three months and came back than left because they felt trapped.

And we account for everything that comes in to the communities that receive it, not only to those who give. That double transparency is what has kept the projects standing.

Every path begins with a small decision sustained over time. There is no need to solve everything: there is a need to start with something you can keep up.

On the ways to help page you will find the four options, with the amount you choose and the possibility of giving once or every month.
